  2. I’ve been a diabetic for 15 years, and I’ve only recently discovered (unfortunately) that the single best way to control blood sugar is via a low-carb diet.

    Three things to consider:
    Start with small, easy changes.
    Don’t worry about animal fat, cholesterol, and salt.
    Be willing to spend more money on healthy food if it tastes better and saves you time.

    For 1, figure out what single change you can make now to trade out a carb for a non-carb item and then move on when you’re comfortable.

    For example, if you drink soda, trade it for a diet coke or soda water (spoil yourself by adding a lime).

    For 2, my biggest problem with switching to low-carb was that I couldn’t find any “healthy” alternative, and I wasn’t crazy about eating vegetables all the time.

    For 3, let me give an example. For a couple months, I juiced almost everyday with my new juicer. Then, when I wanted to have a life, I had to stop. It just took too much time to prepare and clean. But, I still liked juice… So, now I spend $7.50 at the local juice joint for 20 oz. And when i did the math, I was spending a few bucks more. Yes, it adds up, but so does the damage to your body from skipping out on healthy food. Your body is worth an extra $3/day.

    Another example: I really like salmon. I can eat it all the time. But tilapia is cheaper. Unfortunately, tilapia can sometimes taste like an old rubber shoe. Hence, with my new philosophy, i only eat salmon (or better).

    Anyway, here was my path to low-carbing:

    Breakfast – I traded oatmeal for bacon & eggs. That single change did a great deal to improve my blood sugar – probably because I didn’t start my day on a roller coaster of highs and lows.
    Lunch – I switched from sandwiches to chicken salads. Beware of sweetened dressings… Ranch and blue cheese are better. When I did have sandwiches or hamburgers, I asked for lettuce wraps instead of a bun. No fries – just a side salad.
    Dinner – I eat salmon, steak or sausage. Will have steamed vegetables on the side, like broccoli or green beans.
    Snacks – Nuts like almonds and cashews are great. Beef jerky is good. And vegetable juice, of course.

    Altogether, I’ve reduced my carb intake from 400-450 grams/day to 100-150. I’ve also cut my insulin intake from 45 units/day to 25 units/day – and my blood sugar control is great. And the bonus is that I’ve lost 12 pounds.
